RUS and proposing the city of St. Petersburg. André Gueisbuhler confirmed that this application is
complete. The Council will take place on May 18 and 19, 2012.
Bruno Grandi thanked RUS for their offer to host the FIG Council. He pointed out that RUS was
always ready to help our Federation.
Decision: The Council tacitly approved the candidature of St. Petersburg (RUS).
16. Miscellaneous
16.1 -- 2011 World Gymnaestrada in Lausanne (SUI)
Margaret Sikkens Ahlquist reported on the progress of the preparations. This year the event will
take place July 10-16 in Lausanne (SUI). Currently 53 Federations with a total of 19,323
participants are registered. Along with the Gymnaestrada, we will celebrate the 130
th
anniversary
of the foundation of the FIG. The next World Gymnaestrada will be organized in 2015 in Helsinki
(FIN); preparations have already begun.
Margaret Sikkens Ahlquist is looking forward to seeing everybody in July in Lausanne.
16.2 -- 2012 Olympic Games in London (GBR)
André Gueisbuhler reported on the preparations of the next Olympic Games. He mentioned
several problems: first of all three days of finals were forced on us; then as a result of pressure
from American television, there will be no FIG Gala at the 2012 Olympic Games. The IOC has
already assured us that the FIG Gala can be organized again at the 2016 Olympic Games. We will
receive an amount of approximately USD 700,000 from the IOC as compensation. It is a
regrettable situation.
The Secretary General added that due to financial reasons, it was not possible to build a new hall
as planned originally. Consequently the RG competitions will take place at Wembley. Furthermore
we have just learned that the official FIG hotel has been given to other entities.
There are nonetheless some positive news: the FIG can look forward to working with Matthew
Greenwood, who knows how to organize FIG events, as well as with Debbie Jevans, Sports
Manager, who is also doing everything she can to help us.
André Gueisbuhler presented on the screen the program/schedule of the Tests Events, which will
take place January 10-18, 2012. The contract must still be completed before it can be signed.
London will cover the hotel expenses of the gymnasts and some delegations. The RG Test Events
are scheduled in Hall 02, even though we would have preferred to have them at Wembley. During
the Olympic Games, the RG gymnasts will have the possibility of staying at hotels close to
Wembley; the Olympic Village is relatively far away from that area, even though transportation will
be organized between the Olympic Village and Wembley. Every NOC will be free to decide
whether to lodge its RG gymnasts at the Olympic Village or at Wembley. Detailed information will
be provided at the RG World Championships in Montpellier (FRA).
16.3 New Planning for Allocating FIG Events (6 years in advance)
André Gueisbuhler pointed out that in principle or otherwise agreed, our events are awarded 4
years in advance. After many debates, the Executive Committee is now proposing to award them 6
years in advance, because large competition halls are very much in demand. Our Statutes let us
make this change, since the relevant article stipulates that events must be allocated "sufficiently in
advance".
