INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF GYMNASTICS
Bruno Grandi pointed out that in reality and with the exception of qualifying competitions for the
Olympic Games, it is very difficult for us to find organizers. Furthermore we must also think about
the renewal of political authorities, most likely over a period of six years. We must also take into
consideration the fact that fluctuating exchange rates do not make it possible to guarantee prices.
For this purpose, a new clause should be included in our contracts. Nonetheless he is convinced
that the FIG Marketing Commission has good reasons to propose this change.
Brian Stocks explained to the Council the reasons that had led the Marketing Commission to make
this proposal. He is well aware of its inconveniences, but the advantages will be far greater.
Seemingly four years are not suitable; why not try then something else?
Farid Gaybov remarked that sometimes exceptional circumstances compel us to do so, but we
modify the code of points basically every year. In his opinion, six years are too long of a time
period.
Bruno Grandi said that he himself was not convinced of the merits of this proposal. It is only for the
World Gymnaestrada that we have several interested organizers consistently, even if sometimes
signed contracts, to his regret, must be renegotiated. Everyone should be aware of these facts
before making the decision to award our events six years in advance.
André Gueisbuhler asked whether we wanted to vote or preferred to maintain some flexibility. In
his opinion, it is important for an organizer to know when an event is allocated and by whom. He
pointed out that in the past, we had agreed under exceptional circumstances to award an event 5
years in advance.
The President proposed awarding the events 6 years in advance as per the planning that is shown
on the screen. The Executive Committee will be able to make decisions on a case by case basis
on events for which bids are not received within the deadlines. He proposed voting.
Decision: By a majority (22 votes in favor), the Council approved the proposal to award
events 6 years in advance and if necessary the EC will review the allocation of events on a
case by case basis.
16.4 FIG Marketing Commission
Bob Colarossi, President of the Marketing Commission, summarized the discussions of the
Executive Committee meeting in March, which was mainly devoted to marketing. He apologized to
the assembly for his absence the previous day due to personal and exceptional reasons. He
presented on the screen the vision laid down by the Executive Committee for the future and good
of our sport. Understanding who we are as the FIG by identifying all players that surround us was
at the heart of lengthy debates. The strengths and weaknesses of our sport were then analyzed, as
well as its opportunities and perils. He described on the screen the various issues that were raised.
Bob Colarossi presented the decisions made by the Executive Committee here in San Jose that
will allow us to move forward with this marketing project. The new documents/forms concerning the
submission of bids will be posted on the FIG website shortly. There is a common desire to improve
things, especially communication and the allocation of our events. The Marketing Commission
must still work on some parts of this project. He then presented the draft of our manual for
organizing events. He provided details about this document, which will be available on our website
in French and English in the near future. He warmly thanked his colleagues on the Marketing
Commission for their cooperation.
